"This hour in history needs a dedicated circle of transformed nonconformists. Our planet teeters on the brink of atomic annihilation; dangerous passions of pride, hatred and selfishness are
enthroned in our lives; and men do reverence before false gods of nationalism and materialism. The saving of our world from pending doom will come, not through the complacent adjustment of the conforming majority, but through the creative maladjustment of a nonconforming minority." Martin Luther King, Jr.

=item        4        Drinking Liberally 04FEB2005
A group of former Kerry-Edwards campaign volunteers has formed a new chapter of Drinking Liberally here in Tallahassee. Drinking Liberally is an informal, inclusive weekly Democratic drinking club. Raise your spirits while you raise your glass, and share ideas while you share a pitcher. Drinking Liberally gives like-minded, left-leaning individuals a place to talk politics. You don't need to be a policy expert and this isn't a book club - just come and learn from peers, trade jokes, vent frustration and hang out in an environment where it's not taboo to talk politics.
Drinking Liberally meets every Friday beginning at 6:30 PM at Andrew's Bar & Grill in downtown Tallahassee. There are no membership dues or admission fees, just visit the Drinking Liberally website atwww.drinkingliberally.org and have your name added to our e-mail list.
Bars are democratic spaces - you talk to strangers, you share booths, you feel the bond of common ground. Bring democratic discourse to your local democratic space - build Democracy one drink at a time!
While drinking liberally, always drink responsibly.

item        15        PROTEST IN FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. 19mar05
UFPJ is also supporting a major regional demonstration in Fayetteville, NC. We hope those of you within driving distance of Fayetteville will make this action your priority. Fayetteville is home to Fort Bragg (ground zero for the 82nd Airborne Division and many of the Army's elite units. Beyond Fort Bragg, NC hosts 4 other of the nation's largest military bases, making the state one of the friendliest to the military-industrial complex.
Less well-known -- that Fayetteville is also home to a growing base of anti-war activists and organizations (military folks, veterans, families of active-duty soldiers and veterans, students, workers, housewives, clergy, educators) all part of a vibrant, growing, statewide network. They stand firm in the knowledge that organizing in Fayetteville is a key to bringing the troops home from Iraq.

Local members of a broad-based coalition of local Tallahassee legislative activists and Equality Florida who are dedicated to making Florida students safe are holding a town hall meeting to discuss upcoming legislation called the Dignity for all Students bill.
The Dignity for All Students Coalition includes more than 90 local and statewide organizations. The Dignity bill is modeled after laws introduced in other states that have proven effective in reducing bullying, harassment and violence and increasing student safety and sense of well-being in school.

The bill includes a specific statewide ban on harassment and discrimination based on real or perceived race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, gender, sexual orientation, marital status and mental or physical disability. The town hall meeting will be a panel discussion concerning student issues, experiences intended to open lines of communication.
The local Tallahassee coalition members would like to encourage students, teachers, school administrators, public officials and interested citizens to attend this town hall meeting. It is scheduled for 2pm March 22nd at the Progressive Center,

Often people ask how they got on this list. Well. I've given up spending a lot of time asking why
about anything, especially horrible things, happen. I'm far more interested in how to fix it. But anyway, there are several methods to get on this list.
1]  Put your email address down at anything or anywhere that looks like the  stuff I post.
2]  Have a mutual friend with me that sends both of us a post.
3]  Post to a list serve I'm on.
4]  Be recommended by a friend.

Ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment is just three states short. It is justice long over due. Tallahassee NOW is running a signature ad to legislators in the Tallahassee Democrat on Monday, March 14, which coincides with the third annual Ratification Rally at noon that day and FL NOW Lobby Day. We have at least 50 signatures so far from around the state. We are seeking at least 50 more so we can have a decently sized ad. Suggested contribution is $10 for a line with name and city. Please send your check to TallahNOW, PO Box 47, Tallahasssee, FL 32302-0047 now, while you remember.
