Often people ask how they got on this list. Well. I've given up spending a lot of time asking why
about anything, especially horrible things, happen. I'm far more interested in how to fix it. But
anyway, there are several methods to get on this list.
1] Put your email address down at anything or anywhere that looks like the stuff I post.
2] Have a mutual friend with me that sends both of us a post.
3] Post to a list serve I'm on.
4] Be recommended by a friend.
5] Ask

Submit announcements two to three weeks in advance of event in plain text in the body of the email.

=item 10 4th Iraq War Anniversary Lake Ella Luminaries 19MAR2007
Tallahasseeans Who Believe It's Time To Come Home

Regarding the luminary bags:
At the meeting we agreed to write the first name and the age of each soldier on the bag. I have
begun distributing the bags, asking each person to do 100 names. If you plan to attend the event, it would be helpful to also fill the bags with sand and bring them to the event ready to be placed.
The event will be from 7 to 9 p.m. We will probably start placing the bags around noon on
Monday. I want to be done early so that we can get on the 6 o'clock news. We will begin lighting the luminaries at 6 p.m. Sunset is around 7:30. At 9 p.m. we will start cleaning up.
Lydia Vickers of CodePink plans to commemorate this 4th year anniversary with events all
weekend:
Friday: movies at the Progressive Center
Saturday: "A Day of Education About The Costs of The War in Iraq" and reading of names of the
dead-all day at Bloxham Park which is in the Chain of Parks to the right of the Farmer's Market on Park Street.
Sunday: Peace Vigil at regular time (12L30-2:30) in front of the Old Capitol

Tallahasseeans Who Believe It's Time To Come Home will encircle Lake Ella with 3200

Werkmeister Conference: On the Origin of Species
(Sponsored by the William H. and Lucyle T. Werkmeister Endowment Fund) March 23-24, 2007
Conference Theme:
150 Years on the Origin of Species (see announcement at
http://www.fsu.edu/~philo/new%20site/sub_category/werk-origin07.htm)
The Origin of Species by the English naturalist Charles Darwin is one of the most important
scientific books ever written. First published in 1859, its 150th anniversary will be in 2009, the
year in which we will also celebrate the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth. This year's Werkmeister Conference on the Origin of Species will lay the foundation for the Cambridge
Companion to the Origin of Species, to be edited by Robert J. Richards and Michael Ruse.
Participants will be presenting first drafts of the papers to be included in the Companion,
and this is reflected not only in the excellence and qualifications of the participants, but also in the broad scope of the material, looking in detail at all parts of the Origin, as well as at pertinent
external questions from rhetoric to religion and on to the very nature of the various editions of the great work.

=item 18 The Great Silent Grandmother Gathering 13MAY2007
The women of Ohio, U.S.A., call upon the women of the world, from day-old babies to
our most senior elders, to stand with us on May 13, 2007, to save the world. Our project is based
on Sharon Mehdi's book The Great Silent Grandmother Gathering. If you don't know the story, a
summary of the original version is on the website
www.standingwomen.org
If you think it is appropriate, please send this message on to all of the women throughout
the world who you think might like to join us. We will be standing for the world's children and
grandchildren, and for the seven generations beyond them.
We dream of a world where all of our children have safe drinking water, clean air to breathe, and
enough food to eat. A world where they have access to a basic education to develop their minds
and healthcare to nurture their growing bodies. A world where they have a warm, safe, and
loving place to call home. A world where they don't live in fear of violence--in their home, in
their neighborhood, in their school, or in their world. This is the world of which we dream. This
is the cause for which we will stand.
If you share this dream, please stand with us for five minutes of silence at 1 p.m. your
local time on May 13, 2007, in your local park, school yard, gathering place, or any place you deem appropriate, to signify your agreement with this statement. We ask you to invite the men and boys who you care about to join you. We ask that you bring bells to ring at 1 p.m. to signify the beginning of the five minutes of silence and to ring again to signify the end of the period of
silence.

Our guilt in this sectarian game is obvious. We want to divide our potential enemies
Why are we trying to divide up the peoples of the Middle East? Is this just our casual racism? Or is there something darker in our Western souls?

link#4 HOW BARACK OBAMA LEARNED TO LOVE ISRAEL
On March 2, Democratic presidential hopeful Senator Barack Obama gave a speech that proved that when it came to supporting Israel he is "as strong as Clinton, as supportive as Bush, as friendly as Giuliani" in the words of one Israeli journalist. Obama blamed Palestinians for
the failure of peace efforts and uttered no criticism of Israeli policies. Yet once upon a time Obama supported Palestinian rights and an even-handed US approach to solving the conflict. EI co-founder Ali Abunimah who has met the candidate half a dozen times over a decade
analyzes the speech and traces Obama's path into the hardline pro-Israel camp.

The tired assertion that America "supports democracy" in the Middle East is increasingly

link#13 Chalabi Surges Back to Prominence
Elizabeth Sullivan, The Plain Dealer (Cleveland, OH)
. ...Yet there's one bad penny who just keeps coming up, and up and up: Ahmad Chalabi, the
wily Iraqi exile banker who cozied up to Iranian intelligence under the very nose of the CIA and
then helped land us in war with Iraq through intelligence misinformation. Incredibly, Chalabi
now is in charge of the Iraqi government's civilian liaison for the "surge." He's Iraqi Prime
Minister Nouri al-Maliki's new right-hand man -- a role that should give every planner at the
Pentagon pause -- running what the Wall Street Journal calls the "popular committee for
mobilizing the people." (...) Chalabi's prominence says that Iran doesn't have to be invited into
Iraq. It's already there. Chalabi's dual games with the CIA and Iranian intelligence go back at
least to March 3, 1995...

link#14 Air America: Compounding the War Crime in Iraq
Chris Floyd, Empire Burlesque
Late Saturday, the US Air Force launched a series of bombing raids on southeast Baghdad.
This is absolutely shameful, that the US is bombing from the air a civilian city that it militarily
occupies. You can't possibly do that without killing innocent civilians, as at Ramadi the other
day. It is a war crime. US citizens should protest and write their congressional representatives.
It is also the worst possible counter-insurgency tactic anyone could ever have imagined. You
bomb people, they hate you. The bombing appears to have knocked out what little electricity
some parts of Baghdad were still getting...
http://www.uruknet.de/?p=30949

link#15 Iraqis are People, too
Cindy Sheehan, CommonDreams.org
. ...Another one of our fellow Americans had this to say about civilian casualties: "You have
to look at who's doing the killing," said Neal Crawford, a restaurant manager in Suttons Bay,
Mich., who guessed that about 10,000 Iraqis had been killed. "If these people are dying
because a roadside bomb goes off or if there's an insurgent attack in a marketplace, it's an
unfortunate circumstance of war people die." This comment also ignores the fact that the
occupation of Iraq is a war of choice that never should have been waged. No insurgency
existed before American troops were forced to roll their tanks into a country that was filled
with innocent people (...) In the article from the AP the median number of Iraqis killed that
those polled guessed was: 9890. A recent very scientific (yes, science does work, George)
study put the median Iraqi death toll at 655,000, and my contacts in Iraq, including the Sheik
who spoke yesterday claim that it is well over one million. An equivalent amount of Americans
would exceed ten million! I don't think that anyone would call that an "unfortunate
circumstance of war."...

link#16 So, who is the terrorist?
Sabbah's blog
Over 5,000 Palestinians killed by the Israeli army since 2000. Since the outbreak of the
second Palestinian Intifada in September 2000, until late January 2007, the Israeli army has
killed 5,050 Palestinian men, women and children, wounded 49,760 others and detained
10,4000 others. 351 Palestinian women have been killed, 150 patients have died at
checkpoints and 66 others have been killed due to beating by Israeli settlers. 36 medical staff
have been killed, 9 members of the press, and 220 sportsmen (...) According to B'Tselem (The
Israeli Information Center for Human Rights) for the same period, 704 Israeli civilians and 316
Israeli occupation forces were killed by the Palestinians. Still wondering who is the terrorist?...

Iraq for long has been a mosaic of religions, sects and ethnic minorities. Church spires,
mosque minarets and conical structures of Yazidi shrines have for centuries adorned the
skyline of several towns and villages in northern Iraq. But this mosaic is under threat and very
soon the country might be emptied of its religious and ethnic minorities thanks to the
consequences of U.S.-led 2003 invasion of the country. Visitors to the northern city of Mosul,
currently one of the most restive areas in Iraq, were amazed by its mosaic. In this city and its
outlying villages lived peacefully together Christians with their different denominations,
Shebeks a group of Shiite Kurds - Turkmen, Yazidis amid majority Arabs and Kurds. But the
city is quickly losing its mosaic character. Most Christians have left the city known for its
numerous ancient churches and monasteries some of them dating to the early decades of the
birth of Christianity...

link#18 Who Ordered the Assassination of Dr. David Kelly?
MICHEL CHOSSUDOVSKY, Global Research
The BBC has become embroiled in a yet another set of media distortions regarding the death
of British government weapons inspector Dr. David Kelly in 2003. Kelly died in mysterious
circumstances in the woods near his home in Oxfordshire. Kelly was Britain's foremost expert
on biological weapons, with direct access to WMD intelligence on Iraq. In the months leading
up to his death, he had become increasingly skeptical regarding Iraq's alleged WMDs. "It was
Dr Kelly who exposed claims by President George Bush, Tony Blair and Colin Powell that
mobile biological warfare units had been found in Iraq as false."...

link#19 Apartheid looks like this
By Jonathan Cook, The Electronic Intifada, 23 February 2007

The scene: a military checkpoint deep in Palestinian territory in the West Bank. A tall, thin elderly man, walking stick in hand, makes a detour past the line of Palestinians, many of them young men, waiting obediently behind concrete barriers for permission from an Israeli
soldier to leave one Palestinian area, the city of Nablus, to enter another Palestinian area, the neighbouring village of Huwara. The long queue is moving slowly, the soldier taking his time to check each person's papers. The old man heads off purposefully down a parallel but empty lane reserved for vehicle inspections. A young soldier controlling the human traffic spots him and orders him back in line. The old man stops, fixes the soldier with a stare and refuses.

link#20 'Exodus' of Iraq's ancient minorities
Patrick Cockburn, Independent
Iraq's minorities, some of the oldest communities in the world, are being driven from the
country by a wave of violence against them because they are identified with the occupation
and easy targets for kidnappers and death squads. A "huge exodus" is now taking place,
according to a report by Minority Rights Group International. The UN High Commissioner for
Refugees says 30 per cent of the 1.8 million Iraqis who have fled to Jordan, Syria and
elsewhere come from the minorities. The Christians, who have lived in Iraq for 2,000 years,
survived the Muslim invasion in the 7th century and the Mongol onslaught in the 13th but are
now being eradicated as their churches are bombed and members of their faith hunted down
and killed along with other minority faiths. The report, <>Assimilation, Exodus, Eradication:
Iraq's minority communities since 2003, written by Preti Taneja, says that half of the minority
communities in Iraq, once 10 per cent of the total population, have fled...

link#21 Iraqi Kids After The Invasion
I was talking with an Iraqi psychiatrist about cases of kids traumatized by the war and terror wave that is ravaging Iraq, the doctor told me that the number of the Iraqi kids who suffered of different types of psycho problems since the US invasion till now is increasing rapidly. He said, " If I receied five patients in my clinic every day, be sure one of them is a kid, which means I receive no less than 60 kids per a month." The doctor was talking about Iraqi girl whose only 9 yr old but she is in panic all the time and all of a sudden she might start screaming without any reason if she is at home or at school. The reason of her case is that while she was heading home from her school she has seen some gunmen kidnapping a kid after beating him severely and she was stuck between but survived by a miracle...

link#23 Walter Cronkite: Iraq War a "Disaster"
Walter Cronkite weighs in on the situation in Iraq stating: "We should have gotten out a long
time ago. This is a mistake, this entire war there, it's a disaster. And the earlier we get out, the
better. It's a terrible disaster. Look at the loss of lives of our young Americans there and those
who have been maimed for life, for what purpose? No purpose we can define."

link#24 MEDIA ALERT: IRAQ CIVILIAN SUFFERING - THE MEDIA SILENCE
MEDIA LENS: Correcting for the distorted vision of the corporate media
In all the endless coverage of the American "surge" committing 20,000 extra troops to the
war in Iraq, there has been barely a word about the likely consequences for the civilian
population. A report in the Lancet medical journal last year estimated that, as of July 2006,
655,000 Iraqis had died as a result of the US-UK invasion - one in seven families had lost a
household member. In the Independent earlier this month, Les Roberts, co-author of the
Lancet report, suggested that Britain and America may have triggered "an episode more
deadly than the Rwandan genocide" in Iraq. (Roberts, 'Iraq's death toll is far worse than our
leaders admit,' The Independent, February 14, 2007). In an exchange with a Media Lens
reader, Roberts explained his reasoning. "The Fordam University assessment put the
[Rwandan] death toll at ~6-700000, that is the only quantitative assessment that I have
seen... and I was there so I do not use the comparison lightly." (Roberts, Media Lens message
board, February 18, 2007) The media's response to Roberts's claim? Complete silence. No
other national UK press outlet has since mentioned his comparison with Rwanda. And yet, as
we have noted elsewhere, when Roberts made similar observations on mass killings in Congo
in the 1990s, he was widely quoted by press and politicians...

link#25 Bush Revenge
...With Bush revenge, though all Iraq's wealths have been drained by the US and its allies
for more than four years now, more han 650,000 Iraqi killed in this war, regardless of the
missing and handicaps or those who are left with psycho problems or homeless, all of that was
not enough. To revenge for one man, an entire country with more than 26 million has to be
destroyed completely and its leader has to be slaughter for the eyes of Bush, the father, like
a sheep and still Bush the son is not happy. Can Mr.Bush tell us what does he want from the
Iraqis and what they should do so that he would be totally convinced that he had revenged
for his father and that his mission was accomplished and he is the best avenger in the history?
Is it not enough for Bush all this Iraqi blood had been shed for the sake of his father? and to
submit Iraq on golden dish to Iran...

In his new book, CIA analyst, distinguished scholar, and best-selling author Chalmers Johnson
argues that US military and economic overreach may actually lead to the nation's collapse as a
constitutional republic. It's the last volume in his Blowback trilogy, following the best-selling
"Blowback" and "The Sorrows of Empire." In those two, Johnson argued American clandestine
and military activity has led to un-intended, but direct disaster here in the United States..

link#33 Walter Reed patients told to keep quiet
Soldiers at Walter Reed Army Medical Center's Medical Hold Unit say they have been told they
will wake up at 6 a.m. every morning and have their rooms ready for inspection at 7 a.m., and
that they must not speak to the media.
"Some soldiers believe this is a form of punishment for the trouble soldiers caused by talking to
the media," one Medical Hold Unit soldier said, speaking on the condition of anonymity.
It is unusual for soldiers to have daily inspections after Basic Training.
Soldiers say their sergeant major gathered troops at 6 p.m. Monday to tell them they must follow
their chain of command when asking for help with their medical evaluation paperwork, or when
they spot mold, mice or other problems in their quarters.
