http://www.dfalink.com/event.php?id=18354

Coalition building is central to expanding the progressive movement and the impact of effective action. Every day organizations across the country combine their resources to fight to end the Iraq War, eliminate poverty or provide universal health care.

DFA Night School is our interactive, online training program. In this session, we will discuss strategies to build progressive coalitions in order to gain influence with elected officials. There are lots of groups out there doing good work. SEIU Organizer Ben Monterroso will join us for a session on how can we build coalitions so that these groups are working in concert with each other instead of competing.
The workshop will start at 8:30pm Eastern Time and continue for approximately one hour. It will consist of a conference call with an accompanying downloadable slideshow which you can save to your computer in advance

Werkmeister Conference: On the Origin of Species
(Sponsored by the William H. and Lucyle T. Werkmeister Endowment Fund) March 23-24, 2007
Conference Theme:
150 Years on the Origin of Species (see announcement at
http://www.fsu.edu/~philo/new%20site/sub_category/werk-origin07.htm)
The Origin of Species by the English naturalist Charles Darwin is one of the most important
scientific books ever written. First published in 1859, its 150th anniversary will be in 2009, the
year in which we will also celebrate the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth. This year's Werkmeister Conference on the Origin of Species will lay the foundation for the Cambridge
Companion to the Origin of Species, to be edited by Robert J. Richards and Michael Ruse.
Participants will be presenting first drafts of the papers to be included in the Companion,
and this is reflected not only in the excellence and qualifications of the participants, but also in the broad scope of the material, looking in detail at all parts of the Origin, as well as at pertinent
external questions from rhetoric to religion and on to the very nature of the various editions of the great work.

The Annual Jazz and Blues Festival begins Saturday, March 24th at the Tallahassee Museum of History and Science (those of us who have been around for a while know it at the Junior Museum), starting at 11:00 AM. For fifteen consecutive years, the Tallahassee Museum has produced the Tallahassee Jazz & Blues Festival. For one weekend each spring, the main stage at the Museum comes alive with the hottest jazz, swing, Dixieland, Zydeco, R & B, and traditional and contemporary blues available to audiences in North Florida. This Festival provides a unique venue to share and experience the varied musical forms and rhythms of musical expression which have evolved from the “Heart and Soul of America.”
The Royal Garden Dixieland Band plays at 12:00 noon, and it would be great if all of our friends and fans would show up for this event. It's a fund raiser for the museum and it’s a really good cause with only a nominal fee to enter the grounds. They also serve their pioneer breakfast from 7 to 11 and you get a lot to eat.

=item 32 The Great Silent Grandmother Gathering 13MAY2007
The women of Ohio, U.S.A., call upon the women of the world, from day-old babies to
our most senior elders, to stand with us on May 13, 2007, to save the world. Our project is based on Sharon Mehdi's book The Great Silent Grandmother Gathering. If you don't know the story, a summary of the original version is on the website
www.standingwomen.org
If you think it is appropriate, please send this message on to all of the women throughout
the world who you think might like to join us. We will be standing for the world's children and
grandchildren, and for the seven generations beyond them.
We dream of a world where all of our children have safe drinking water, clean air to breathe, and enough food to eat. A world where they have access to a basic education to develop their minds and healthcare to nurture their growing bodies. A world where they have a warm, safe, and loving place to call home. A world where they don't live in fear of violence--in their home, in their neighborhood, in their school, or in their world. This is the world of which we dream. This is the cause for which we will stand.
If you share this dream, please stand with us for five minutes of silence at 1 p.m. your local time on May 13, 2007, in your local park, school yard, gathering place, or any place you deem appropriate, to signify your agreement with this statement. We ask you to invite the men and boys who you care about to join you. We ask that you bring bells to ring at 1 p.m. to signify the beginning of the five minutes of silence and to ring again to signify the end of the period of
silence.

Global Realignment and the Decline of the Superpower
By Mike Whitney
The truth is there's a straight line from the founding of this country to the killing fields of
Baghdad. That line may be interrupted by periods of enlightenment and peace, but it is still an
unbroken stripe from the Continental Congress to Abu Ghraib, from Bunker Hill to Falluja, from
Valley Forge to Guantanamo Bay. It all grows from the same root.

The Great Moral Issues of Our Time

FARMWORKERS
1]
Well, your search is over! You can find all the Facts and Figures on farmworker wages, working conditions, modern-day slavery, and even a "day in the life" of a farmworker in Immokalee at the CIW website. Go to http://www.ciw-online.org/news.html now to download a copy so
you'll have it handy to email, print, and share with friends to help spread the word of the Campaign for Fair Food.
In the same vein, we've put together another document, now available on the site as well, that brings together all the key elements of analysis and supporting materials behind the Campaign. This "Campaign Analysis" piece lays out the role of the fast-food industry in farmworker poverty, the elements of the agreement with Taco Bell, McDonald's efforts to undermine the gains won in the Taco Bell agreement, the consequences of McD's actions since 2005, and more in one handy 4-pg document. The benefits of U.S.-style democracy
Imad Allo, Azzaman
The achievements of U.S.-style democracy which the current U.S. administration has tried to apply in Iraq are numerous. The benefits Iraqis have gained from these achievements have prompted the administration to try and spread them throughout the Middle East, taking Iraq as a small experiment. And here are a few examples of these achievements
and their advantages in case you have not yet heard of them or have not experienced them for the bad luck of not being able to live in Iraq. The U.S. democracy has interrupted power supplies and caused chronic fuel shortages. Iraqis have given up even dreaming of going on a picnic to their once beautiful tourist spots like the Habaniya Lake or the ancient Akarkouf. Iraqis now dread to go to the cinema - if there any cinemas left in the country. Eating out is a dream of the past and taking the children for an outing is unthinkable. Under the U.S. democracy in Iraq you must be a prisoner of your own house or you risk being killed, injured or kidnapped. Even staying home is no longer safe. It is very likely for unidentified gunmen to storm your house in the middle of the night or in broad day light. Millions of Iraqis are now on holiday in Syria or Jordan, spending the extra foreign cash they have been earning due to massive U.S. reconstruction works...

Who Gave America the Right?
Mohammed Theib Al-Hamidani ( Al Medina, Saudi Arabia ), Translated By Andy Allred,
It can no longer be hidden: The extreme surge in America's global military power is
suppressing heads of state who stick their necks out to expose facts and lay bare the truth.
As this goes against its wishes, America alleges various pretexts to pursue its policies. But the
question here is, who granted America the right to be international judge, prosecutor, and
executioner in the name of its own self-preservation? And who granted America the right to
label all of its enemies as terrorists and reactionaries?...

The Last Hot-button Issue for the Bush
Adminstration
1Hostages to Policy
What We Know About Waste and War in Iraq
By Tom Engelhardt
Let's start with the obvious waste. We know that hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have lost their
lives since the Bush administration invaded their country in March 2003, that almost two million
may have fled to other countries, and that possibly millions more have been displaced from their
homes in ethnic-cleansing campaigns. We also know that an estimated 4.5 million Iraqi children
are now malnourished and that this is but "the tip of the iceberg" in a country where diets are
generally deteriorating, while children are dying of preventable diseases in significant numbers;
that the Iraqi economy is in ruins and its oil industry functioning at levels significantly below its
worst moments in Saddam Hussein's day -- and that! there is no end in sight for any of this.

Several weeks ago, I took the infamous media tour of the facilities at Guantanamo. From the

had no doubt that I was on a foreign planet or, at the very least, visiting an impeccably
constructed movie set. Along with two European colleagues, I was treated to two-days-plus of a
military-tour schedule packed with site visits and interviews (none with actual prisoners)
designed to "make transparent" the base, its facilities, and its manifold contributions to our
country's national security.

Women's lives unraveling in Iraq
Mithre J. Sandrasagra, IPS
Amid the chaos and violence of U.S.-occupied Iraq, the significance of widespread gender-
based violence has been largely overlooked, according to a groundbreaking report released
here by MADRE, an internationally active women's human rights organization. Iraqi women
are enduring unprecedented levels of assault in the public sphere, including widespread
abductions, public beatings, death threats, sexual assaults, honor killings, domestic abuse,
torture in detention, beheadings, shootings and public hangings, said the report titled
"Promising Democracy, Imposing Theocracy: Gender-Based Violence and the U.S. War on Iraq"
(...) Women have been systematically attacked by theocratic militias on both sides of the
sectarian divide, but the most widespread violence has been committed by the Shi'a militias
affiliated with the U.S.-backed government the Badr Brigade and Mahdi Army, according to
