=item 3 Stuart Couch, Ethical GITMO JAG Speaks 31JUL2008
A former military prosecutor who refused to pursue charges against a Guantanamo Bay detainee linked to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks is set to give a talk next week at Florida State University FSU College of Law Rotunda.
USMC Lt. Col. Stuart Couch declined to bring the charges because he believed the evidence against Mohamedou Ould Slahi was tainted by torture. Slahi is a suspected al-Qaeda operative who allegedly assembled the so-called Hamburg cell, which included the hijacker who piloted United 175 into the South Tower of the World Trade Center.
Couch held that incriminating statements made by Slahi were obtained after he was tortured by military personnel.

On Earth Peace invites your congregation to join the World Council of Churches' 2008 International Day of Prayer for Peace campaign.
You know your community.
Is there domestic violence, homicide, poverty, child abuse, racism?
You also know God has a different vision for life -- for abundant life, for dignity for all, for justice and shalom.
Will you consider calling together a public prayer service about your community's violence this September?
Hundreds of thousands of people from churches, synagogues, and mosques around the world will join together in the International Day of Prayer for Peace.
For participants connecting through On Earth Peace, there will be opportunities to connect with other peace-committed Christian congregations concerned about violence, access to On Earth Peace resources, and guidance on how to make praying and acting for God's peace an ongoing activity.
We look forward to working with you to creatively address the needs of your community with spiritual power. For more information and to register, please visit our website by clicking

Secret Red Cross Report of C.I.A. Torture of Captives: Book --'The abuse constituted war crimes, placing the highest officials in the U.S. government in jeopardy of being prosecuted.' 11 Jul 2008 Red Cross investigators concluded last year in a secret report that the Central Intelligence Agency’s interrogation methods for high-level 'Qaeda' prisoners constituted torture and could make the Bush administration officials who approved them guilty of war crimes, according to a new book on counterterrorism efforts since 2001. The book says that the International Committee of the Red Cross declared in the report, given to the C.I.A. last year, that the methods used on Abu Zubaydah, the first major Qaeda figure the United States captured, were "categorically" torture, which is illegal under both American and international law.

John Dean: Congress Is "a Bunch Of Wusses"
On Rob Kall's radio show, Dean gave a refreshingly, honestly coarse take on Congress' FISA capitulation when he bluntly said, "Well, it looks like we have a bunch of wusses up there on Capitol Hill, not much interested in civil liberties and very interested in C.Y.A."

Conference to Plan Bush War Crimes Prosecution
Law School Dean Calls Conference to Plan Bush War Crimes Prosecution 17 Jun 2008 The dean of Massachusetts School of Law at Andover is planning a September conference to map out war crimes prosecutions, and the targets are President [sic] Bush and other administration officials. The dean, Lawrence Velvel, says in a statement that "plans will be laid and necessary organizational structures set up, to pursue the guilty as long as necessary and, if need be, to the ends of the Earth." Other possible defendants, he said, include federal judges and John Yoo, the former Justice Department official who wrote one of the so-called torture memos. "We must insist on appropriate punishments," he continued, "including, if guilt is found, the hangings visited upon top German and Japanese war criminals in the 1940s."

The Incredible Shrinking Bush
There is little consensus on whether the G-8 summit can be seen as a success for the climate. What is certain is that US President George W. Bush had little part in the efforts to save the world. He didn’t lead, he only followed -- and the American superpower never before looked as small as it did this week

Spying Law Challenged
Spencer Ackerman, of The Washington Independent: "With the Congressional battle over revising the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act ending in a victory for President George W. Bush last week, a coalition of civil libertarians and journalists has decided to take the fight to the courts. Late last week, the American Civil Liberties Union, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, the Service Employees International Union and The Nation magazine filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York challenging the constitutionality of the FISA Amendments Act of 2008, which Bush signed into law on Thursday."

US faces global funding crisis, warns Merrill Lynch
The US Treasury is running out of time before foreign patience snaps.
Merrill Lynch has warned that the United States could face a foreign "financing crisis" within months as the full consequences of the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac mortgage debacle spread through the world.
The country depends on Asian, Russian and Middle Eastern investors to fund much of its $700bn (£350bn) current account deficit, leaving it far more vulnerable to a collapse of confidence than Japan in the early 1990s after the Nikkei bubble burst. Britain and other Anglo-Saxon deficit states could face a similar retreat by foreign investors.

Frustration In The Army Officer Corps - The Untold Story
There is great frustration within the ranks of the Army’s officer corps. While some reporters working for publications specializing in the coverage of the military have touched on this, it’s a topic generally ignored or avoided in the mainstream press – probably due to the difficulties of reporting it.
The sources of this frustration are seemingly obvious. At least they are to those wearing the Army combat uniform every day.
Fighting two wars without a large enough Army has resulted in repeated deployments, with “dwell time” between deployments sometimes being less than a year. With soldiers being deployed roughly every other year, third deployments are becoming commonplace among soldiers in brigade combat teams and combat support units. That includes members of the Army National Guard and Army Reserve. Promises to extend the dwell time to eighteen or more months won’t kick in until 2011 or beyond, which could be two deployments from now for some people.

Corporate Socialism I
Bush poised to bail out more corpora-terrorists: U.S. Weighs Takeover of Two Mortgage Giants 11 Jul 2008 Senior Bush administration officials are considering a plan to have the government take over one or both of the nation’s two largest mortgage finance companies and place them in a conservatorship if their problems worsen, people briefed about the plan said on Thursday. Under a conservatorship, the shares of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac would be worth little or nothing, and any losses on mortgages they own or guarantee -- which could be staggering -- would be paid by taxpayers.

BARACK OBAMA and John McCain continue to argue about war. McCain says to
keep the troops in Iraq until we "win" and supports sending more troops
to Afghanistan. Obama says to withdraw some (not all) troops from Iraq
and send them to fight and "win" in Afghanistan.

For nearly a year now, the public has been treated to regular doses of Mr. Obama's grandiloquent oratory and his sweeping "Follow me to Shangri-la" promises. These flourishes are usually followed by "clarifications" on the central issues which identify Obama as a center-right conservative with no intention of disrupting the status quo.

Marine: 'We Didn't Take Any Prisoners'
CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. - A Marine sergeant accused of murdering an unarmed Iraqi captive during heavy fighting in Fallujah in 2004 was heard on tape July 10 telling how his squad argued over what to do with their prisoners and saying he "did one guy" as they sought to keep up with their unit.
The recording was made when Sgt. Ryan Weemer, 25, was applying for a job with the Secret Service. It was played by military prosecutors at the start of an Article 32 hearing in which investigating officer Maj. Glen Hines will determine whether there is enough evidence to support a court-martial.

With Unexpected Iraqi Withdrawal Demand, Bush Has Lost the War
The official Iraqi demand for U.S. withdrawal confirms what was becoming increasingly clear in recent months -- that the Iraqi regime has decided to shed its military dependence on the United States.
The two strongly pro-Iranian Shiite factions supporting the regime in Baghdad, the Supreme Islamic Iraqi Council (SIIC) and al-Maliki's own Dawa Party, were under strong pressure from both Iran and their own Shiite population and from Shiite clerics, including Ayatollah Ali Sistani, to demand U.S. withdrawal.

Jewish guerrillas told British: Quit Palestine or die
Fighters were led by future Israeli premier
A pamphlet warning Britons to leave the Middle East or face death has come to light in a stash of illicit propaganda.
The document does not hail from Basra or Baghdad, nor was it penned by the Islamists of al-Qaeda or the al-Mahdi Army. It was found in Haifa, about 60 years ago, and it was issued by the underground group led by Menachem Begin – the future Prime Minister of Israel and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize.

Israeli Crackdown on Charities Problematic for Palestinian Authority
Nablus, West Bank - When Faris Abu Hasan was deciding where to send his two young daughters to school, one factor stood out above all others: test scores.
So Abu Hasan opted against the beleaguered local government school, and chose instead the Islamic Basic School for Girls, where the classes were small and the teachers offered individual attention in math, science, history and English. "I wanted them to go to the best school in Nablus. And this is the best school in Nablus," said Abu Hasan, a lawyer.

CHEMICAL WARFARE: 'LAST GHOST' OF THE VIETNAM WAR
A CLOCKWORK ORANGE
40 years ago, the U.S. decided the best way to win a jungle war was to kill the jungle. For the job, it chose one of the more toxic substances known to man, and no less than 80 million dioxin-laced litres of it rained down on Vietnam Today, as many as three million Vietnamese, their children and grandchildren bear the scars of what many consider a war crime. But despite repeated attempts, they alone have failed to win compensation for what was done to them Canada cares because, like the U.S., it produced Agent Orange and, like Vietnam, it must cope with
contamination and with citizens who were harmed. A special report by Geoffrey York in Hanoi and Hayley Mick in Elmira, Ont.
