item 7 International Day of Prayer for Peace 21SEP2008
On Sunday September 21, 2008...
Will Your Church Be Praying for Peace?
Will Your Church Speak Up About Violence?
On Earth Peace invites your congregation to join the World Council of Churches' 2008 International Day of Prayer for Peace campaign.
You know your community.
Is there domestic violence, homicide, poverty, child abuse, racism?
You also know God has a different vision for life -- for abundant life, for dignity for all, for justice and shalom.
Will you consider calling together a public prayer service about your community's violence this September?
Hundreds of thousands of people from churches, synagogues, and mosques around the world will join together in the International Day of Prayer for Peace.
For participants connecting through On Earth Peace, there will be opportunities to connect with other peace-committed Christian congregations concerned about violence, access to On Earth Peace resources, and guidance on how to make praying and acting for God's peace an ongoing activity.
We look forward to working with you to creatively address the needs of your community with spiritual power. For more information and to register, please visit our website by clicking

1 Day
25,000 Volunteers
1 Million Doors
On Saturday, September 20, thousands of volunteers across the U.S. will knock on a Million Doors for Peace.
Veterans For Peace is joining, United for Peace and Justice, SOAW, US Action/True Majority, Win Without War, and other organizations to make this day the biggest peace action of 2008.
Volunteer doorknockers will ask people to sign an antiwar petition directed to Congress. Our message: End this immoral war, bring our troops home, and invest in America's future. In addition, we will encourage people to join local anti-war groups, engage in voter education work, and become a part of the organized antiwar movement in their area.
In order to reach a million people in a single day, we must organize at least 25,000 volunteers in all 50 states. Peace groups have never implemented such an elaborate communication and organizing plan before now, but with new and traditional communications tools available, we anticipate success with this groundbreaking, grassroots project. This project will not end on September 20, but it will be a new beginning of a more organized grassroots movement for peace and justice.
Training materials, petitions, local groups to canvass with in your area, and handouts will be provided.

HARVARD BUSINESS SCHOOL IS FAR WORSE THAN YOU THOUGHT
In 2004, the journalist Philip Delves Broughton walked away from what sounds like a peach of a job, Paris bureau chief for the Daily Telegraph, to enroll in Harvard's world-famous MBA course.
Feelings of unease emerge even before he arrives. He reads a student guide on What to Bring. "Don't bring that guitar . . . Don't bring any books from literature or history classes . . . Don't bring your cynicism. Do bring all the diverse rest of you. We can't wait to share the experience." Immediately, his bolshie British bullshit- detector thrums into life: "Who were these people? And why did they talk like this? Why can't I bring my cynicism? Or my books? Aren't they a part of the ‘diverse rest of me'?" . . .

Obama Selects Biden to Reassure the US Ruling Elite
The selection of Senator Joseph Biden as the vice-presidential candidate of the Democratic Party underscores the fraudulent character of the Democratic primary campaign and the undemocratic character of the entire two-party electoral system. Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, the supposed protagonist of “change,” has picked as his running-mate a fixture of the Washington establishment, a six-term US senator who is a proven defender of American imperialism and the interests of big business.

Suffocating Dead Zones Spread Across World's Oceans

Man-made pollution is spreading a growing number of suffocating dead zones across the world's seas with disastrous consequences for marine life, scientists have warned."

The Candidate We Still Don’t Know
McCain has even prompted alarms from the right’s own favorite hit man du jour: Jerome Corsi, who Swift-boated John Kerry as co-author of “Unfit to Command” in 2004 and who is trying to do the same to Obama in his newly minted best seller, “The Obama Nation.”
Corsi’s writings have been repeatedly promoted by Sean Hannity on Fox News; Corsi’s publisher, Mary Matalin, has praised her author’s “scholarship.” If Republican warriors like Hannity and Matalin think so highly of Corsi’s research into Obama, then perhaps we should take seriously Corsi’s scholarship about McCain. In recent articles at worldnetdaily.com, Corsi has claimed (among other charges) that the McCain campaign received “strong” financial support from a “group tied to Al Qaeda” and that “McCain’s personal fortune traces back to organized crime in Arizona.”

Tbilisi admits it miscalculated Russian reaction
Jan Cienski, Financial Times, August 22 2008
Georgia did not believe Russia would respond to its offensive in South Ossetia and was completely unprepared for the counter-attack, the deputy defence minister has admitted.
Batu Kutelia told the Financial Times that Georgia had made the decision to seize the South Ossetian capital of Tskhinvali despite the fact that its forces did not have enough anti-tank and air defences to protect themselves against the possibility of serious resistance.

The Puppet Masters Behind Georgia President Saakashvili
By F. William Engdahl
Mihkail Saakashvili was deliberately placed in power in one of the most sophisticated US regime change operations, using ostensibly private NGOs (Non Governmental Organizations) to create an atmosphere of popular protest against the existing regime of former Soviet Foreign Minister Edouard Shevardnadze, who was no longer useful to Washington when he began to make a deal with Moscow over energy pipelines and privatizations.

BUSH REGIME SPENT SIX YEARS ARMING & TRAINING GEORGIA. . . LOST IT ALL IN SIX DAYS
Ian Traynor, Guardian, UK - Pity Georgia's bedraggled first infantry brigade. And its second. And its hapless navy. For the past few evenings in the foothills of the Southern Caucasus on the outskirts of Joseph Stalin's hometown of Gori, reconnaissance units of Russia's 58th army have been raking through the spoils of war at what was the Georgian army's pride and joy, a shiny new military base inaugurated only last January for the first infantry, the army engineers, and an artillery brigade.

What Price Israel? (1953)
By Alfred M. Lilienthal
In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson sent the King-Crane Commission (30) to Palestine and other places in the Near East for an American survey of conditions in the former Ottoman Empire. On its return, the Commission declared that a "National home for the Jewish people is not equivalent to making Palestine a Jewish State" and that such a "State could not be erected without the gravest trespass upon the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine."

By David Halpin
''The mission is to break the Israeli siege, an absolutely illegal siege which has plunged a million and a half Palestinians into wretched conditions: imprisoned in their own homes, exposed to extreme military violence, deprived of the basic necessities of life, stripped of their most fundamental human rights and dignity. The siege violates the most fundamental principle of international law: the inadmissibility of harming civilian populations.''

Israel to change route of West Bank barrier
Israel has agreed to alter the planned route of its separation barrier outside a major West Bank Jewish settlement to allow Palestinians more access to their land, the justice ministry said on Thursday. The state prosecutor's office told the High Court that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Defence Minister Ehud Barak have decided to "significantly" alter the course of the security fence near Maale Adumim, a statement said.
The controversial barrier would be moved around 1,000 acres closer to Maale Adumim, the largest Jewish settlement in the Palestinian territories. The decision came in response to complaints filed to Israel's High Court by Palestinian villagers.

Israel's response to the Iranian challenge has been out of synch with developing realities for some time. Recently though, it has become dangerously counter-productive, anchored as it is in denial. As Israel intensifies its role as threatener-in-chief, and clings to a "more sticks, bigger sticks" line, events all around are moving on.

My Palestinian Wife
By Charley Reese
Every now and then, the rumor arises that I have a Palestinian wife. Some of my kin were highly amused by a debate on that subject that was being conducted by letters to the editor in their local paper recently.
Apparently, it does not occur to anyone simply to ask me. As a matter of fact, I don't have a wife. I'm a widower, and the one wife I had was a sweet Midwestern girl of Methodist, German and Swedish extraction. I don't have a Palestinian mistress or girlfriend. I don't even have a Palestinian bowling pal.

Iraq Takes Aim at Leaders of US-Tied Sunni Groups
The Shiite-dominated government in Iraq is driving out many leaders of Sunni citizen patrols, the groups of former insurgents who joined the American payroll and have been a major pillar in the decline in violence around the nation.
In restive Diyala Province, United States and Iraqi military officials say there were orders to arrest hundreds of members of what is known as the Awakening movement as part of large security operations by the Iraqi military. At least five senior members have been arrested there in recent weeks, leaders of the groups say.

Key U.S. Iraq strategy in danger of collapse
US paying $300 a month to former insurgents, many of them part of al-Qaeda 20 Aug 2008 A key pillar of the U.S. 'strategy' to pacify Iraq is in danger of collapsing because the Iraqi government is failing to absorb tens of thousands of former Sunni Muslim 'insurgents' who'd joined U.S.-allied militia groups into the country's security forces. Under the program, the United States pays each militia [known as the Sons of Iraq or Awakening councils] member a stipend of about $300 a month and promised that they'd get jobs with the Iraqi government. But the Iraqi government has brought only a relative handful of the more than 100,000 militia members into the security forces. Now officials are making it clear that they don't intend to include most of the rest. "We cannot stand them, and we detained many of them recently," said one senior Iraqi commander in Baghdad, who spoke only on the condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to discuss the issue."Many of them were part of al Qaida despite the fact that many of them are helping us to fight al Qaida."
