Lake Ella merchants hope for 'A Flood of Support'
By Kati Schardl
DEMOCRAT STAFF WRITER
Merchants affected by flooding at Lake Ella have banded together to organize a fundraiser to
help offset costs incurred by loss of merchandise, lack of flood insurance and water damage to
shops.
"A Flood of Support" will take place from 2 to 10 p.m. Sunday at the American Legion Hall at
Lake Ella. Those most affected by the flooding Joe's Bike Shop (which is still flooded), Polka
Dot Shoes (also still flooded), Sweet Stuffin's and Lofty Pursuits will bring salvaged (and
undamaged) merchandise to the legion hall to sell at bargain prices at the event, which will also
include a silent auction featuring donated items from other locally owned businesses, music by
Moon Pie Fever and Carrie Hamby & Friends, and more. Head Over Heels may also be there
with merchandise, but the building is still inaccessible and it has been impossible to determine
what's salvageable, according to event organizers.
"Small businesses operate on a day-to-day budget," said Wendy Halleck, owner of Quarter Moon
Imports, which suffered minor flood damage. "To even miss one or two days of sales could make
or break a small business."
Admission is a suggested donation of $5. Parking will be limited and it's suggested that those
attending park at Ole Times Country Buffet or across the street at the Lake Ella Publix shopping
center.
Halleck said that volunteers are needed now to help move merchandise from the flooded stores.
Call 294-2930 to help out, make a donation or get more information.

item 7 International Day of Prayer for Peace 21SEP2008
On Sunday September 21, 2008...
Will Your Church Be Praying for Peace?
Will Your Church Speak Up About Violence?
On Earth Peace invites your congregation to join the World Council of Churches' 2008
International Day of Prayer for Peace campaign.
You know your community.
Is there domestic violence, homicide, poverty, child abuse, racism?
You also know God has a different vision for life -- for abundant life, for dignity for all, for
justice and shalom.
Will you consider calling together a public prayer service about your community's violence this September?
Hundreds of thousands of people from churches, synagogues, and mosques around the world will
join together in the International Day of Prayer for Peace.
For participants connecting through On Earth Peace, there will be opportunities to connect with
other peace-committed Christian congregations concerned about violence, access to On Earth
Peace resources, and guidance on how to make praying and acting for God's peace an ongoing activity.
We look forward to working with you to creatively address the needs of your community with
spiritual power. For more information and to register, please visit our website by clicking

1 Day
25,000 Volunteers
1 Million Doors
On Saturday, September 20, thousands of volunteers across the U.S. will knock on a Million
Doors for Peace.
Veterans For Peace is joining, United for Peace and Justice, SOAW, US Action/True Majority,
Win Without War, and other organizations to make this day the biggest peace action of 2008.
Volunteer doorknockers will ask people to sign an antiwar petition directed to Congress. Our
message: End this immoral war, bring our troops home, and invest in America's future. In
addition, we will encourage people to join local anti-war groups, engage in voter education work,
and become a part of the organized antiwar movement in their area.
In order to reach a million people in a single day, we must organize at least 25,000 volunteers in
all 50 states. Peace groups have never implemented such an elaborate communication and
organizing plan before now, but with new and traditional communications tools available, we
anticipate success with this groundbreaking, grassroots project. This project will not end on
September 20, but it will be a new beginning of a more organized grassroots movement for peace
and justice.
Training materials, petitions, local groups to canvass with in your area, and handouts will be
provided.

James K. Galbraith | How to Burn the Speculators
James K. Galbraith, Mother Jones: "Whenever economies sour, politicians blame speculators.
But on occasion, they are right to do so. Speculators did wreak havoc in 1630s Holland, 1720s
France, and in the American stock market in 1929. That crash led to the Great Depression and 60
years of tight controls on speculation. Now, thanks to our 30-year infatuation with free markets,
the controls are off, and the mad gamblers are at it again. Yesterday's burst bubble was housing;
today's expanding ones are energy and food. True, we have major long-term energy problems that
cannot be laid at the feet of speculators.... But do supply and demand explain oil prices at $140
per barrel, with voices from Goldman Sachs projecting $200 for next year (a figure that would
